TerraFirmaCraft forging calculator

This TerraFirmaCraft forging calculator takes your target value and the last three rules from the anvil screen and works out how to hit the metal: the fewest actions, in order, with the work value after each one. Numbers follow TerraFirmaCraft 1.18 and 1.20. It is an unofficial fan tool. Checked

Forging calculator: target value and last three rules

What the anvil shows

A new item starts at 0. Type the current value if you have already worked it. Leave a rule on "No rule" if the recipe shows fewer than three.

Shortest sequence

11 actions, first to last

  1. 1Bend+7work 7
  2. 2Bend+7work 14
  3. 3Upset+13work 27
  4. 4Shrink+16work 43
  5. 5Shrink+16work 59
  6. 6Shrink+16work 75
  7. 7Shrink+16work 91
  8. 8Shrink+16work 107
  9. 9Draw−15work 92
  10. 10Bend+7work 99
  11. 11Light hit−3work 96

Work goes from 0 to 96. Any hit rule is met by any of the three hits.

Unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with the TerraFirmaCraft team. The solver keeps the work value in the 0 to 149 range the mod itself uses and was checked against brute-force search. It has not been tried against a live anvil, so confirm on your own world.

On the TerraFirmaCraft anvil every recipe has a target work value and up to three rules about your final actions. You start at 0, every action moves the value up or down, and the bar must land exactly on the target while the rules are met by the last three actions you took. The mod's own table keeps the value between 0 and 149, so the order of actions matters, not just their sum.

The eight actions are light hit (−3), medium hit (−6), hard hit (−9), draw (−15), punch (+2), bend (+7), upset (+13) and shrink (+16). A rule names a kind of action and a position. "Hit" in a rule is not a specific strength: light, medium and hard all count. The positions are last, second last, third last, not last, and any.

Because a hit rule accepts all three strengths, the tool picks one specific strength for each hit and shows its value, so the arithmetic in the list always adds up. Each hit changes the work value by a different amount, so keep the strength the list names.

The end rules are checked against the final three actions only. A "not last" or "any" rule can be met by an action that also helps reach the target, so the tool searches all orders instead of reserving three fixed slots.

TFG anvil calculator: does TerraFirmaGreg use the same rules?

TerraFirmaGreg is a modpack that combines TerraFirmaCraft with other mods. We read the TerraFirmaCraft source files only, so the numbers on this page are TerraFirmaCraft's. We could not confirm from a source whether a given TerraFirmaGreg version changes any forging value, so we make no claim either way. Check your pack: open an anvil recipe, compare the eight action icons and the target and rule icons with the list above, and try one short sequence. If your anvil behaves as the table says, the calculator applies to you.

This page is not made by or connected to TerraFirmaGreg or TerraFirmaCraft, and it uses none of their artwork.

Forging cheat sheet: fewest actions for common targets

This table works without any script. It shows the shortest list of actions from a fresh item at 0 to common target values, with no end rules. Real recipes add rules, so use the calculator when the anvil shows them. Each row was produced by the same solver as the calculator above.

TargetActionsSequence (first to last)
102Upset, Light hit
202Bend, Upset
303Bend x2, Shrink
404Bend x2, Upset x2
504Punch, Shrink x3
605Punch, Upset x2, Shrink x2
706Punch, Bend, Upset, Shrink x3
805Shrink x5
906Upset x2, Shrink x4
1007Bend, Upset, Shrink x5
1108Bend x2, Shrink x6
1209Bend x2, Upset x2, Shrink x5
1309Punch, Shrink x8
14010Punch, Upset x2, Shrink x7

The order inside a row is one valid order. Other orders of the same actions can also work as long as the value stays between 0 and 149.

Worked examples

Target 96 with hit last, bend second last, draw third last

The three rule actions add up to −3 + 7 − 15 = −11, so the free actions before them must reach 107. The shortest way to 107 is two bends, one upset and five shrinks: 7 + 7 + 13 + 16 x 5 = 107, eight actions. Then draw (−15) gives 92, bend (+7) gives 99 and a light hit (−3) gives 96. Eleven actions in total, and the calculator above shows exactly this list.

Target 70 with no rules

The solver returns 6 actions: Punch, Bend, Upset, Shrink x3. Check by adding: 2 + 7 + 13 + 16 + 16 + 16 = 70. The tests below confirm that no shorter list reaches 70.

Already at 40, target 40, hit last

You still have to strike once because the rule needs a hit as the final action, but a hit lowers the value, so the tool first raises it: Punch, Bend, Hard hit. That is 3 actions in all.

How the forging sequence is worked out

The tool treats the anvil as a map. Each position on the map is a work value from 0 to 149 plus the last three actions you took, because the end rules only look at those three. From the starting position it tries all eight actions, keeps only the moves that stay in range, and expands outward one action at a time. The first position that sits on the target value with all rules met is a shortest answer. Because it expands one action at a time, no shorter answer exists.

Screenshot of the result list on Oct 31, 2026, ending on 96.

We tested the solver on 300 random targets and rule sets. For each one we compared its length with a separate brute-force enumeration of every sequence up to seven actions, and with a table built the way the mod builds its own optimal-step table.

What can change this

Mod authors can change forging values, and modpacks can change the mod. This page used the TerraFirmaCraft 1.18.x and 1.20.x source on Oct 31, 2026. Older TerraFirmaCraft versions, such as the 1.7.10 releases, use different rules and are not covered here. If the numbers on your anvil differ from ours, trust your game. Quick answers

How does the TerraFirmaCraft forging calculator work?

You enter the work value you are at, the target value from the recipe, and up to three end rules from the anvil screen. The tool searches every legal order of actions, keeps the work value between 0 and 149 the whole time, and returns the shortest list that ends on the target with all three rules met.

What numbers do the forging actions use?

Light hit is −3, medium hit −6, hard hit −9, draw −15, punch +2, bend +7, upset +13 and shrink +16. These are the values in the ForgeStep source file of TerraFirmaCraft 1.18.x and 1.20.x.

What does a "hit last" rule mean?

A hit rule is met by any of the three hits: light, medium or hard. "Last" means the final action you take before finishing, "second last" the one before it and "third last" the one before that. "Not last" is met if the second last or third last action matches.

Does this work for the TFG anvil?

TerraFirmaGreg builds on TerraFirmaCraft, but we could not confirm which TerraFirmaCraft forging rules each TerraFirmaGreg version ships. Check your pack: if your anvil screen shows the same eight actions and the same target and rule icons, the numbers here should apply.

Why does the tool say no sequence found?

Either the rules contradict each other, for example two different actions both set as "last", or the combination cannot be reached without leaving the 0 to 149 range. Remove a rule to see which one is the problem.

Is this the official TerraFirmaCraft tool?

No. This is an unofficial fan tool. It is not made by or connected to the TerraFirmaCraft team, and it uses no game artwork.
