Random spell scroll generator 5e: ways to use it
A spell scroll is one of the easiest magic items to hand out. It is single use, it is limited by what the reader can cast, and it fits any treasure hoard from the first dungeon to the last. The hard part at the table is deciding which spell is on it. A random spell scroll generator for 5e removes that decision so that the loot feels like something the party found, not something you designed for them.
Set the mode to "By spell level" when you already know how generous you want to be. A cantrip or first level scroll is a small prize. A fifth level scroll is a plot event. Set it to "By scroll rarity" when you work from a treasure list that says common, uncommon or rare: the tool turns the rarity into the matching spell levels from the SRD entry and picks a spell from any of them.
The class filter is useful in two ways. If you want the party to be able to use the scroll, choose the class of the character who will read it. If you want a scroll that is a puzzle for the party, choose a class nobody plays, and let the cleric find out that a scroll of a wizard-only spell is unintelligible to them. Because the filter only shows spells on that class list in the SRD, it never hands out a spell the class could not cast.
Rolls use your browser's random number source and nothing is sent anywhere. The result card keeps the numbers that matter at the table: the school, the rarity, the spell save DC, the spell attack bonus and the copy DC. If you need a different set of random tools, the same site has a Genshin Impact team randomizer and a Hunt: Showdown loadout randomizer.
Spell scroll table d100: our bands and the SRD numbers
Many dungeon masters like to roll a d100 on a table. The treasure tables in the Dungeon Master's Guide are not part of the SRD, so we do not copy them. The d100 mode here uses bands we chose ourselves: low levels are common and high levels are rare. The tool rolls the die, finds the band and then picks a spell of that level, filtered by class if you chose one. If your class has no spell at that level, for example a Paladin and a cantrip, it rolls again and shows the final die value.
| d100 | Scroll level | Rarity |
|---|---|---|
| 1-15 | Cantrip | Common |
| 16-40 | 1st level | Common |
| 41-60 | 2nd level | Uncommon |

Random scroll by spell level: what a scroll can do
The SRD describes a spell scroll as a single spell written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class list, you read the scroll and cast the spell without material components. Casting takes the spell's normal casting time. When the spell is cast, the words fade and the scroll crumbles to dust, and if the casting is interrupted the scroll is not lost. A spell of a higher level than you can normally cast needs an ability check with your spellcasting ability, and the DC equals 10 plus the spell's level. On a failed check the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.
The saving throw and attack numbers listed on the scroll replace the reader's own, so two scrolls of the same level behave the same way whoever uses them.
A wizard spell on a scroll can be copied into a spellbook. The copier must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC that depends on the level, shown in the table above as the copy DC. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the scroll is destroyed. Cantrip scrolls in the SRD carry no copy rule, so the table shows n/a.
How many spells are in the pool
The SRD has 319 spells. The table above gives the count per level; the counts per class list below show how deep each class is.
| Class | SRD spells on its list |
|---|---|
| Bard | 111 |
| Cleric | 105 |
| Druid | 106 |
| Paladin | 31 |
| Ranger | 37 |
| Sorcerer | 120 |
| Warlock | 64 |
| Wizard | 204 |
A spell can be on several class lists, so these numbers add up to more than 319.

About the SRD data and the limits of this tool
We use the spell names, levels, schools and class lists from the System Reference Document 5.1, which Wizards of the Coast released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. We read the data through the public dnd5eapi.co interface on November 2, 2026: 319 spells and the ten Spell Scroll entries. We show spell names and the numbers on the scroll, not the full spell text, so for the effect of a spell look it up in your own copy of the rules or the SRD.
What the tool does not know: spells from other books, optional class features that add spells to a list, the rules of other editions, and house rules. It also does not track price or availability, because the SRD does not give a price for scrolls. If your table uses a 2024 rules edition, check whether a spell moved to a different level or list before you hand out a scroll.

Quick answers
How does the random spell scroll generator pick a spell?
It filters the 319 SRD 5.1 spells by your level or rarity choice and by the class you pick, then chooses one spell with equal chance. Every spell left in the filter is equally likely.
Does it use the d100 spell scroll table from the Dungeon Master's Guide?
No. The d100 mode uses our own bands, shown in a table on this page, because the book's treasure tables are not part of the free SRD. Use it as a quick way to weight low levels more than high ones, or ignore it and pick a level yourself.
Why is my favorite spell missing?
The tool only knows the 319 spells in the System Reference Document 5.1. Spells from other books are not included and we do not guess at them.
What are the save DC and attack bonus on a scroll?
They come from the SRD Spell Scroll entry and depend only on the level of the spell on the scroll, for example save DC 15 and attack +7 for a 3rd level scroll. The scroll does not use the reader's own numbers.
Can any character read the scroll?
Only if the spell is on that character's class spell list. The class filter on this page shows you which scrolls a class could read. The SRD text also says a higher level spell needs an ability check.
Is this an official Dungeons & Dragons tool?
No. It is an unofficial fan tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast. It uses only text from the SRD 5.1 under the CC-BY-4.0 licence and no artwork.
